Oppidum – Large pre-Roman enclosed town (e.g., Verulamium, Braughing–Puckeridge) where specialist minting, craft and trade activity cluster. Also used to describe large Iron Age defended sites or population centres. Often very large (≥ 20 ha) late Iron-Age fortified towns with timber-framed stone walls, gateways, street plans and specialist quarters. Found in Central & Western Europe, esp. Hallstatt & La Tène cultural zones. Manching (DE), Bibracte (FR), Heuneburg (DE).
