Lower Palaeozoic slates

Lower Palaeozoic slates are sedimentary rocks formed from mudstones and Shales that have undergone metamorphism, resulting in a distinctive layered structure and cleavage. These rocks are primarily found in the British Isles and are associated with the Caledonian orogeny, a period of mountain building during the Paleozoic era. The slates are often found in areas where Lower Palaeozoic sedimentary and volcanic rocks are exposed.
