Lower Palaeozoic slates are sedimentary rocks formed from mudstones and Shales that have undergone metamorphism, resulting in a distinctive layered structure and cleavage. These rocks are primarily found in the British Isles and are associated with the Caledonian orogeny, a period of mountain building during the Paleozoic era.
