Altar dedicated to Jupiter of Doliche, Caelestis Brigantia, and Salus - Corbridge

Description: Altar by G. Julius Apolinaris, centurion of VI Victrix, his name, rank and unit replacing someone else's or else recarved to make a correction. RIB 1131 (with Jupiter Aeternus Dolichenus and Salus). See also Brit. xxvi (1995), 380, no. 7 for another possibility.

Decoration and iconography: On left side crowned Genius with right hand held above an altar, and left hand supporting a cornucopia; on right winged cupid with sickle in right hand and bunch of grapes in left; on either side of the capital a head in a medallion.

Site: Corbridge (Coria/Corstopitum

Find context: As a kerbstone to the latest road-level south of site XI, Roman Corbridge.

Other notes: Several casts of this altar have been made; one was formerly in the Museum of Antiquities, Newcastle upon Tyne, now the Great North Museum: Hancock; see Forster in PSAN³ 3rd Ser. 4 (1910) 270, PSAN 4th Ser. 1 (1925) 204.

Current Location: Now in Corbridge Museum.

Date: 3rd century a.d.

Translation: "To eternal Jupiter of Doliche and to Caelestis Brigantia and to Salus Gaius Julius Apolinaris, centurion of the Sixth Legion, at the command of the god (set this up)."

Notes

Lines 6–8 of the original text are secondary text cut after the primary surface had been chiselled off.
