Altar dedicated to Bregans and the Divinity of the Emperor
This intriguing find seems to use the masculine form of Brigantia, which is remarkably similar to Breogan, from the Tower of Hercules myth of Galicia. Although by no means certain, current discussions tend to associate this Bregans with Brigantia, and it's location, in Slack, I propose, would make it more certain. A key aspect to this inscription, is the relationship between the "deity" Bregan, and the imperial Augustus appellation, which gives this deity some very significant associations with Imperial power. And it is this aspect that leads to further certainty, then given it's location, this must be a representative of Brigantia that is being honoured here.
Find context: In Lower Gate, Longwood, 2.4 km. east of Slack fort.
Current location: Now in the Tolson Memorial Museum, Huddersfield.
Translation: "To the god Bregans and the Divinity of the Emperor, Titus Aurelius Quintus gave this as a gift by his own funds and expense."
Notes Bregans is the masc. form of Brigantia; see Richmond in Wheeler, The Stanwick fortifications, North Riding of Yorkshire (1954) 61.
